I recently had one of the top instructors in the world share with me that the problem with kids is
that they don't pay attention long enough to stick with golf. That started me thinking about the whole
instruction side of golf issue. My first thought was, I have always believed that if one of my kids is
not learning it is my fault for not being able to figure out how to transfer knowledge to them in an
interesting and comprehendible manner. My second thought was, my goodness, he is looking at every kid
brought to him for a lesson as his next tour prodigy to keep his name in lights! Good grief.
As a self taught golfer I am still not fascinated with the concept in golf that players are dependent
upon teachers to succeed. I think my 14 year old son could have been Tiger Woods teacher and Tiger would
have no less major trophies in his case. I could be wrong but I doubt if I am too far off.
The point of all of this talk in regards to kids and golf? Well, it is supposed to be fun first and
then challenging. Kids like a challenge but it has to be a challenge they enjoy. And, I can assure
you they don't enjoy some old guy making them spend two hours learning how to hold a golf club. I can also
assure you they don't like being forced to putt from three feet for two weeks before they ever get to swing
a golf club.
